Thoughts (A Poem)

It's been some time since I've put "ink to paper" in an effort to produce a work of poetry.  I stumbled on this piece which I began probably a decade or so ago and thought I'd put some finishing touches on it and share it with you!

It's simply called...

Thoughts

Fleeting thoughts and luminous notions all beget the wisdom of thy soul.
Reluctance of these would thwart thy grace
An act to those would appease.

If but I listen to my inner tone
Resonate throughout my being,
I will question not, a single thought
But add it to the tapestry.

Exultation over recognition
Tho brief it may be.
But like the flower, which endures deviation
The blossom will return to thee.

These thoughts but seeds in an omnipresent realm, subtle and profound
Unfolding into awareness
Only to enfold to ground.

But since the seeds of knowledge are planted
Emerge again they will.
If only we ask for that seed to sprout,
Our thoughts will hold us still.

Sacred splendor of reflection
Perennial wisdom appears yet again.
Tho slight in their brilliant manifestation
But a whisper in thy ear

A thought, deemed created by the thinker of himself
How mistaken he must be
As all idea has an infinite dwelling
Only occasioned by the soul

Despite the thought’s ephemeral movement in the consciousness of man
How refreshing to know being linked to the soul
That thoughts are always at hand.

Learn the "Quick Coherence Technique" for Optimal Well-Being

During a discussion with the executive vice president of Heartmath, Howard Martin, I learned of a brief process whereby anyone can regulate emotions by synchronizing heart and brain to achieve a more balanced and preferred state of being.

It's called the Quick Coherence Technique.

It consists of three simple steps:

Step One: Heart Focus
Step Two: Heart Focused Breathing
Step Three: Heart Feeling.

I invite you to listen to the process delivered by Howard and try it for yourself to experience a more relaxed state, peace of mind and positive emotional stability.

Conversations from the Heart - An Interview with HeartMath's Howard Martin exclusively on Conscious Inquiry Radio with Alexis Brooks

Howard052207154rt“All I want to do is bring out the greatness in great people – and that’s what I want to do for you.”  It was that phrase that Doc Childre, the founder of HeartMath told Howard Martin that has led to a 40 year journey of learning and leading others in an extraordinary understanding of the intelligence of the heart.
Together, Doc Childre and Howard Martin embarked on uncharted territory, delving deep into the quest to comprehend the vast spectrum of human and spiritual life and even consciousness itself.  This brave exploration eventually led to the founding of HeartMath, a cutting edge research and development organization providing unique tools to boost performance, productivity, health and well being.
In this interview with the executive vice president of HeartMath, Howard Martin shares his very personal story about how his meeting Doc Childre, literally took his life in an unexpected direction.  This is the first time he’s ever shared this story publically.
We also discuss life after 2012 and the acceleration of change, the practical application of intuition, and of course the incredible work that HeartMath has done to bring about an evolutionary change in understanding the expanded role that the heart plays in our lives.
This interview was conducted on site in Los Angeles at the Conscious Life Expo in February of 2013.

Personal Evolution and Our Sixth Sense with Sonia Choquette

“The only tuition one needs to pay to obtain real knowledge is
IN-tuition. The only thing it asks is that you PAY attention!
 -Alexis Brooks

What if you were told you could have the answers to nearly every question you have - right at your finger tips?  Well, according to intuitive expert and NY Times best-selling author, Sonia Choquette you can and the answers are simple if you learn to follow your sixth sense.

The sixth sense, also known to many as the intuition is something that we all possess.  And yet many have traded in this innate faculty of knowing for the left brained approach to finding answers to life’s many questions.  As a result we embark upon a long, slogging path of searching but too often come up empty where the answers are concerned.

According to Sonia, two historical foundational paradigms occurred to keep us away from naturally developing and using what is perhaps the most valuable tool we as human beings were inherently given.

Listen as I speak with Sonia about how we can truly develop our many gifts by using our sixth sense, and when we do we will discover that the answer is quite simple!

As a personal anecdotal footnote, I can’t resist sharing with you a most profound experience I had while on the phone speaking with Sonia.  She had been taking me through a little exercise to learn how to tap into the wisdom of my heart in order to access my intuition.  While going through the exercise, she asked me to state out loud some of my current fears and anxieties.  After I voiced my concerns for all to hear, she then asked me to repeat the phrase, “and my heart says…” as if my heart/intuition was speaking directly to me in response to my concerns.  She then asked me to look directly in front of me and tell her what I saw.

Interestingly, there was a centerpiece filled with nuts on my table – that’s what was directly before me!

It wasn’t until well after our interview that I had an epiphany that my heart was communicating to me that my fears were not warranted as if to say, “Are you NUTS?”

Although I had to chuckle after this truly synchronistic encounter, her method proved 100% accurate.  If we follow our heart; the direct channel of our intuition, it will speak to us in profound ways!

Conscious Inquiry with Alexis Brooks Debuts on Conscious Life News!

It is my absolute pleasure to introduce you to a new radio program, exclusively airing on Conscious Life News.

The Conscious Inquiry radio show, will explore subjects within the alternative, spiritual and metaphysical fields combined with your inquiry about these areas, and delivers the leading researchers, authors, teachers and practitioners from many walks of life and from a broad range of perspectives.
Every month, I will present two new guests and explore cutting edge topics to bring to you the very latest in health and wellness, self empowerment, human potential, and solutions to personal and global challenges.  Plus you will learn about the latest discoveries in areas including new science and breakthrough technologies, unexplained phenomena and ESP, near death experiences and the afterlife, consciousness research and much more!
The debut of our new show has been a long time in the making and we are so proud to present it on CLN.
This month, I interview the founder and editor of Elevated Existence Magazine, Tammy Mastroberte as well as Near Death Experiencer and author of the best-selling book Saved by the Light, Dannion Brinkley AND his family.
Both interviews address some of the bigger questions many of us have about the nature of reality and the universe and most importantly the nature of ourselves!
In Tammy's interview, we discuss the afterlife, past lives, synchronicity, forgiveness, and more.  This is a very intimate discussion.  Tammy will share with us her very personal spiritual journey which led her to the founding of her award winning magazine, Elevated Existence.  She says that with each very special interview she conducts (and she's featured some of the top names in entertainment and spirituality on her covers), she learns so much more about the people she interviews and herself!  We'll discuss the spiritual journey of Jane Fonda, Tammy's interview with pioneering past life expert Dr. Brian Weiss and how this led her to discover some of her own past lives plus so much more!

In my interview with Dannion and Kathryn Brinkley and their daughter Alexandra, we discuss each of their unique journeys of transformation - both Dannion and Kathryn are multiple near death experiencers and Alexandra found her own unique path through her natural affinity with nature and shamanism.  All three have done amazing things, working with dying veterans in hospice.  What Dannion has to say about this rewarding work will surely bring a tear (of joy) to your eye! I myself was so moved during this emotional interview conducted at the Conscious Life Expo in Los Angeles last February, that as soon as we stopped recording, I broke down and cried!  Which triggered a teary reaction to all that were in the room!
So please don't miss out.  Make sure to tune in each and every month to Conscious Inquiry!  See you over there!!

If you have any show or guest suggestions.  Please be sure to reach out to me on the Higher Journeys Facebook Page.  Your suggestions are always welcomed!

A Whisper of Wisdom – Thoughts on Prayer in the Wake of the Boston Marathon Tragedy

I remember as a young girl, my father and I would have discussions about what it means to pray.  My father was a man truly ahead of his time.  An otherwise left brained pragmatist; a scientist and inventor, largely self taught, his spirituality was rooted in authentic and open minded inquiry and observation.

He would say to me, “Prayer is not about asking, prayer is about listening – to the gentle whisper of God and to follow the guidance that whisper gives us.”

As I sit in quiet contemplation over the events which took place yesterday here in Boston – now eerily dubbed The Boston Marathon Bombings, I, like many others here locally and perhaps around the world are asking, “where are we going, what is happening and what can we do?”

Every time an event of this caliber occurs, there are initial reactions of shock, then anger and invariably a sustained sense of grief – especially for those directly affected by the events.  For many, if not most, in place of a total sense of helplessness, we resort to prayer, whether it is through a traditional approach, in meditation or just in a moment of silence.

Perhaps we ask in our prayers to be given an answer as to why such an event would occur.  Perhaps we will ask for the “perpetrators” of such an act are brought to justice or that events like these simply cease.  The common thread is that we ask.  Although it is written that “ask and it shall be given to you…”, still these events persist – for whatever reason.  And there is always something to be learned from such experiences.  If nothing more, we have an opportunity to hone our ability to pray effectively.

Many wise ones throughout history have noted that in their most intimate moments of solitude – those brief periods of stillness that come between the words they speak, answers will often bleed through.  These periods cannot be measured and yet they often contain the most powerful and truthful revelations of that for which we are praying.  That “gentle whisper from God” as my father called it can be heard if we are attuned to its signature.

The events of April 15, 2013 (less than 24 hours ago at the time of this writing) are still very fresh in our minds.  We are still preoccupied perhaps with news reports and updates and chatter with our friends and neighbors about the event.  And so it can become difficult to still the mind in preparation for prayer and even more difficult to attune our inner ear to that little whisper that is certainly present.

~In silence, the answers will come~

As time goes on and we are able to clear our heads and our hearts, let us contemplate my father’s advice.  Sit in silence and listen – just listen to what spirit has to say - with no preconceived notions, no conditions and no expectations as to its wise counsel.  Spirit knows our concerns.  Spirit knows where our thoughts are focused.  Perhaps we need not speak a word, but simply feel the feeling in our hearts, whether it is of sadness or grief, anger or resentment, or a plea for peace.  Just listen to the gentle whisper and let it guide you toward the answers you seek.

To all who were both directly and indirectly affected by the events at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, may you receive that gentle whisper and may it comfort you in all the days to come!

Commercial Consciousness

GREED NEVER FELT SO GOOD!  POWER never felt so good!  THE BACK-STAB never felt so good!
Sound like an honest admission from an individual visiting their therapist or maybe a visit to the confession chamber for the occasional cleansing of sinful thoughts?  Perhaps.  But these eye-catching and very blatant statements were featured in a print ad promoting the premiere of a new TV series.  Each statement was accompanied by alluring images of the television show’s actors.
When I first laid eyes on this explicit and outlandish ad nestled within the pages of a popular magazine, I asked myself – how low could they go?  But rather the real question becomes, who are they trying to make the masses into?
It has become increasingly known that the powerful world of advertising has long sought out extreme measures to coerce the public into buying products from hairspray to alcohol to processed foods to medicine.  The goal seems obvious – to generate massive revenue and capture the lion’s share of the market.  But what more and more of the public are discovering is that this goal may be just the tip of the iceberg or a lucrative bi-product of an endeavor whose aim goes far deeper.
Shape Shifting the Consumer
A former major product brand manager had this to say about how roles and responsibilities have changed in the world of marketing products – “When I was a brand manager, my job was basically to make sure product was good; develop new advertising copy, design the pack.  Now a brand manager has an entirely different kind of responsibility.  Their job now is to create and maintain a whole meaning system for people for which they get identity and understanding of the world.”
This is a telling statement for sure.  It gives insight into the prime modus operandi of many major advertisers today – to shape identity and influence behavior.
Having been trained as a journalist and spending a fair amount of years working in advertising and broadcasting in the mid 80’s and into the 90’s, I had an internal purview of seeing this very subtle and yet profound shift in motive take place.  Initially, advertising campaigns seemed relatively benign (I stress relatively)  but eventually persuasion techniques in advertising morphed into an outright dumbing-down of consumers, using pithy one-liners, clever play on words and larger than life imagery to “inform” the consumer as to what they need and moreover who they should be!  In fact, I will never forget that it was when my then general sales manager at a major market radio station in Boston said to me, “we must use theatre of the mind,” referring to some commercial copy I had written which apparently didn’t pass muster in the “convince the consumer at all costs” mantra he had recently adopted.  It was then that I began to realize that integrity was no longer a priority in mainstream media and thus my choice to exit from the industry would be imminent!
This was quite a few years ago.  And although my journalistic focus has taken a 180 degree turn in the past decade or more, I have been keen to eye the trends of socialization in media and what I have discovered is nothing short of alarming.
The following “tag-lines” are associated with some recent ads running on television…and often!  What might they be saying (or shaping) behind the product they are trying to sell?
“Life is a fajita (or a pulled pork sandwich).”
“I Robot – Do You?”
“There IS no mass produced human.”
“Live the regular life.” (Note: actor is wearing a t-shirt that says Regular and Proud of It!)
“The new American is arriving.”
Some of you, especially if you live in the U.S., might be familiar with these lines and what brands they are associated with.  I’m not going to get into the brand names, as I don’t think that matters as much as the power of persuasion techniques they are enlisting to ensure the masses follow suit.
For me, it was quite clear that these statements all fall into the category of persuasion not of the quality or superiority of the product that’s being sold but of the mantra that’s being sold through suggestion: Life (or you) is nothing more than a piece of meat.  I am a robot – are you?  Be regular, average, common – don’t even think about trying to be special or exceptional! I particularly find this line: “There is no mass produced human” curious as the emphasis on “is” implies they are responding to a statement that says, you guessed it: humans are mass produced!  And as for the “New American” – I’ll leave that up to you to decide what they might be referring to (hmm).
The point of the matter at hand is that when one peaks behind the curtain of commercialism and takes notice of the patterns of language, image and redundancy, one may find that these little 1 minute or less spots are posing potential repercussions that can last for many years to come and to society, en masse. As yet another popular brand (for aspirin) says in its ad, “Life isn’t about to stop messing with our heads anytime soon!” (And that’s why you of course need the aspirin!)
Notice the myriad references to “life” in the aforementioned tag lines.
And The Real Consumer is…The Unconscious
Best-selling author and psychologist, Eldon Taylor’s groundbreaking book, Mind Programming gives the reader a deep dive into the psychological intricacies of persuasion and brainwashing, chiefly through our media.  In it he says, “…humans are socialized in ways that produce limited thinking – or rather, trained thinking.  Indeed, this is done so well that a certain blindness exists in most of us.  This unawareness is sometimes well illustrated by what cognitive theorists refer to as context-bound thinking.”  He goes on to say, “If a product is placed in a context that by definition is desirable, then we’re typically blind to seeing the alternative context.”  Although Taylor is speaking primarily of putting something that would otherwise be undesirable to you in a context that you will in turn find desirable, I am suggesting that context-bound thinking is also being used to cover up the alternative context which is being delivered via the unconscious mind.
It was psychologist Carl Gustav Jung who said, “The psyche is the world’s pivot: not only is it the one great condition for the existence of a world at all, it is also an intervention in the existing natural order, and no one can say with certainty where this intervention will finally end.” (On the Nature of the PsycheC.G. Jung)
Jung was a proponent of the power of both the individual and collective unconscious, referring to its mysterious mechanisms as a directive to how we live our lives.  He said, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it (the unconscious) will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
It is my surmise that many advertisers across multiple product sectors have realized this effective mechanism and no doubt use this as a process for shaping culture as we know it.
Enter the Conscious Consumer
Interestingly,  as advertisers have become more flagrant about their messages (e.g. “the greed, power, back-stab tag line), consumers are becoming, slowly but surely more aware of their M.O. and opting to not buy into the messages or in some cases, their products.  We are indeed on the precipice of an awakening on many levels, whether cognizant of the five sense psychological mapping techniques that have been used for years, or the purely spiritual and esoteric underpinnings of reality itself, it is refreshing to see a natural curiosity and yearning to understand the nature of the psyche and of the spirit with all its intricate layers in order to gain greater access to a state of being that is free of coercion from anyone or anything.  The promulgation of free and independent thought and expression is an integral step and the collective realization that we are not beholding to any one mantra for what we think we need or want.  Choice is always at the heart of it.  When we learn to make our choices from the internal advertiser (the intuition that’s nudging us toward what is truly best for us), we will become a conscious consumer – of knowledge, insight and love!
Post Script:
The above summation in my opinion is by no means applicable to all advertisers.  There are indeed some in the media space whose intent is to inform the public of something of value and for the good of humanity.  My aim is to simply illustrate a disturbing trend, primarily within the mainstream.  For all of those whose messages are driven from a place of altruism…carry on!
