The other day I was speaking to a friend about the outrageous costs associated with college these days. She is in the process of college "shopping" with her son, who will graduate from high school this year. He'd been accepted to several schools and has a preference for where he would like to attend. The good news - he got accepted to his school of choice. The BAD news, she may not be able to send him unless she gets some serious financial help!
During our conversation we reminisced about how when we attended college, the annual tuition was merely a fraction of what it is today, and still our parents complained! If they only knew what they'd be faced with today, we'd probably have to be left to our own devices to figure out how to learn on our own without the luxury of attending college!
I'd recently learned about yet another price hike in college tuition to attend Harvard - nearly $60,000 per year - up almost 4% from the previous year! Granted, this is an Ivy League learning institution, but I cannot help but wonder if there's another way to obtain a "good education" without breaking the bank.
Enter the Autodidact
You might ask, "What on earth is that?" An autodidact is essentially one who obtains knowledge without the benefit of a formal education - essentially a self learner.
It is interesting to note that we've had many autodidacts in our past who proved to be brilliant thought-leaders, change makers - those who greatly affected the course of history. They include Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Frederick Douglas, Thomas Edison, The Wright Brothers, Leonardo da Vinci, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Ernest Hemingway, among many others.
In our recent history and present day, we are still graced with these self motivated and voracious learners...
Musician Frank Zappa, TV's Craig Ferguson of the "Late Late Show," musicians David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix and actor Russell Crowe are all part of the list of those who had the proclivity, the motivation and the In-sight to learn (and learn brilliantly) on their own and without the benefit of a formal education.
Enter Intuition
Whether or not you will find a full-on biographical sketch about these aforementioned "thinkers" that include an admitted acquiescence to something we call intuition, is questionable, although it is well documented that some, including Abraham Lincoln was quite keen toward this inner-aptitude and used it quite frequently.
That said, my absolute surmise is that those who have sought fit to pursue a true education by self-learning and reach the pinnacle of their profession, were inspired by something intangible - they were nudged by an inner knowing that the answers to equations, the science of music, the masterpiece expressed through a paintbrush, or the ability to invent and build the first successful airplane were attainable through the inner sense or intuition. Whereby intuition and insight are first tapped to inspire the outer expression (that of the right brain), the left brain, that of logic and reason, was also no doubt in play. These are people that know and knew how to synchronize "left" and "right" and create in ways unimaginable to others.
In fact, I recently interviewed physician and author of "One Mind," Larry Dossey in which we spoke of the possibility that many if not all of these true thought leaders understood that a continuum of consciousness - that which contains all knowledge, whether yet expressed or not, could be tapped. Inspiration that comes from dreams, waking visions and other inspirations stemming from the "invisible world." This is the true reservoir of education, of discovery and of invention!
It was in fact Buckminster Fuller, renowned scientist, inventor, and philosopher (and also an autodidact) who said, "...we are facing our final evolutionary exam. Is the human species fit to survive? Can we wake up sufficiently so that we can use our prodigious powers for the good of all, and for the many generations to come?"
It is time that we wake up and begin to use our innate prodigious powers as never before. All knowledge is within. Let us begin by tapping our IN-tuition and leave the tuition bills behind!

Creativity and the Nonlocal Mind
Esteemed physician, researcher and author Dr. Larry Dossey kindly agreed to allow me to excerpt a portion of his latest piece published in the Huffington Post entitled, Where Does Creativity Come From? In it he posits that our creative impulse may be derived from a broader spectrum of information; a field of sorts of which we have an intrinsic connection.
I had the pleasure of perusing this compelling post just yesterday and was particularly struck by his myriad examples that would lead one to truly contemplate the idea that our unique creativity may not necessarily originate with ourselves, nor be generated by our brain but rather gleaned from an infinite field of information that some refer to as the quantum field.
I’ve often contemplated this notion, wondering whether original creations are instead channeled from an all pervading and omnipresent source. This is an intriguing concept and one that allows us all to consider the true access we have to information based on the idea that we are innately hard-wired to this field.
Before we get into Dr. Dossey’s compelling piece, allow me to quote Intuition expert, Sonia Choquette whom I interviewed earlier this year about how we are indeed connected to this quantum field and how “invention” may not reside solely with the individual personality.
Choquette states…
“The heart wisdom of you is an intelligence that actually precedes your brain. It is a profound informing intelligence that works on a number of levels. First, it works on connecting you to information in this realm. So you can actually have telepathic crossovers. This is how two people discovered and argued for quite a time over who discovered the AIDS virus, an American or a Frenchman, because they both did…They were actually telepathically sharing information. We also have souls that have access to far more than our local brain consciously contains and that’s why when all of a sudden you start a new project and you just know how to do it. Get on the ski slopes, I know how to ski. I start renovating a house – all of a sudden I’m designing stained glass windows. How do I know? I don’t really know. Because we access the quantum field.”
…And now, let’s delve a little deeper in to where creativity comes from with Dr. Larry Dossey:
My online dictionary says that "create" means to bring into existence something that is new, something that did not exist before. We often imagine creators as solitary individuals struggling against great odds, trying mightily to craft new inventions, music, or art that is novel, fresh, unique. We assume that prior training and skills are crucial in the creative process. Someone who doesn't know arithmetic will never be a great mathematician. A tone-deaf person will never compose majestic music. Someone who is not grounded in the classics can never be a great philosopher.
So much for logic.
When developmental psychologist Joseph Chilton Pearce was in his early 30s, teaching humanities in a college, he was engrossed in theology and the psychology of Carl Jung. Pearce describes himself as "obsessed" by the nature of the God-human relationship, and his reading on the subject was extensive. One morning as he was preparing for an early class, his 5-year-old son came into his room, sat down on the edge of the bed, and launched into a 20-minute discourse on the nature of God and man.
"He spoke in perfect, publishable sentences," Pearce writes, "without pause or haste, and in a flat monotone. He used complex theological terminology and told me, it seemed, everything there was to know. As I listened, astonished, the hair rose on my neck; I felt goose bumps, and, finally, tears streamed down my face. I was in the midst of the uncanny, the inexplicable. My son's ride to kindergarten arrived, horn blowing, and he got up and left. I was unnerved and arrived late to my class. What I had heard was awesome, but too vast and far beyond any concept I had had to that point. The gap was so great I could remember almost no details and little of the broad panorama he had presented ... He wasn't picking up his materials from me. I hadn't acquired anything like what he described and would, in fact, be in my mid-50s and involved in meditation before I did ... My son had no recollection of the event."
Events like this pose deep questions for creativity. Where does the wisdom come from that makes creativity possible?
Baron Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker, the renowned German physicist who was a contemporary of legendary physicists Werner Heisenberg and Niels Bohr, thought deeply about creativity in science. In any great scientific discovery, he said, "We find the often disturbing and happy experience: 'It is not I; I have not done this.' Still, in a certain way it is I -- yet not the ego ... but ... a more comprehensive self."
What is this "more comprehensive self"? I propose that it is a domain of consciousness that is nonlocal or infinite in space and time, in which all information resides. Throughout history it has been called many names -- the Source, the Absolute, God, Goddess, Allah, Universe. My favorite term is the One Mind, in which all individual minds come together.

Gratitude for the Gift of Today
Open your heart to all the blessings this day has to offer.
As humans, we are endowed with so many gifts – the gift of emotion, of expression, of creativity and love. We are given the gift of today.
Too often, the social mores of modern society tug on our emotional fragility, tempting us to be swallowed up in a sea of despair. But just when it seems that there is no hope for happiness, we can open our hearts in gratitude to the natural gifts that we are given on this very day.
Whether it is gazing upon the unfurling of a flower with its intricate and exquisite color, texture and fragrance, or glancing up at the rich blue sky dotted with clouds dancing just above us, or the smile of a stranger we see on the street, these are all gifts, that when gratefully acknowledged have the capacity to bring us back to center; back to our heart.
Here is one of the most touching and heartwarming video montages I have every laid eyes on. It was created by filmmaker, Louie Schwartzberg and its entitled, simply – Gratitude.
I encourage you to make this little video a part of your day, each day as a gentle reminder that beauty, happiness and love are gifts that we can choose to receive each and every day of our lives.
Thank you Louie for sharing this with the world! I am ever so grateful for your gift to us!

A Day Without Technology and Developing Intuitive Perception
Learn how to increase your inner sensory perception (ISP) by periodically unplugging from the devices of modern living.
While preparing for my upcoming radio interview with bestselling author and intuitive coach Penney Peirce, and reading her latest book, Leap of Perception – The Transforming Power of Your Perception, I came across a great little exercise that she suggests we try to get us to focus on our own innate intuitive abilities. She calls this process A Day Without Technology.
"For one month, take one day a week where you’re totally away from the computer, cell phone, calculator, and television. Let voicemail pick up your messages, use telepathy and intuition, practice connecting with the environment and the life inside things. Be creative and see what comes out of you instead of taking things in from other sources. Be in nature, be alone, be quiet for extended periods, and work with the imaginal realm.
During these no-technology days, notice what functions technology has been fulfilling for you, and see how you might do the same thing with your own inner consciousness and energy skills. Build your consciousness and energy muscle."
She maintains that there are ways in which we can develop what she calls “new human abilities,” and by using exercises like this, we will naturally draw from our own inner sensory perception (ISP) while not having to rely upon the ISP of technology for which we’ve become so accustomed.
In my article Tethered to Technology – Have We Reached the Point of No Return? I state:
“As much as I acknowledge an appreciation for the technologies that have afforded so many with more opportunities than we could have imagined even 10 short years ago, I’ve had to remind myself that the tool of technology is just that, and one that I should periodically resolve to live without. In fact I have made a conscious choice to go for periods of time without the need to read email, use my cell phone for talking or texting but rather read a book, paint, garden or just be with myself. It is interesting that in this age of technological temptation; admittedly the mere fact that I’ve had to remind myself to “unplug” speaks volumes to the intractable lure of technology into our habitual routines. Few of us these days are fully immune.”
Impractical as it might seem to allocate a full day to unplugging from our technological feeding tube, when one makes a decision to do so and follows through, one might realize that the true ISP is an inner wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi), that no modern technology can match. Then we will have moved from, as Penney has called it, the Information Age to the Intuition Age!
The potential of our inner gifts are endless!
I highly recommend Penney's book, Leap of Perception, part of a collection which she calls the "Transformation Trilogy"

Conscious Inquiry with Alexis Brooks Debuts on Conscious Life News!
It is my absolute pleasure to introduce you to a new radio program, exclusively airing on Conscious Life News.
The Conscious Inquiry radio show, will explore subjects within the alternative, spiritual and metaphysical fields combined with your inquiry about these areas, and delivers the leading researchers, authors, teachers and practitioners from many walks of life and from a broad range of perspectives.
Every month, I will present two new guests and explore cutting edge topics to bring to you the very latest in health and wellness, self empowerment, human potential, and solutions to personal and global challenges. Plus you will learn about the latest discoveries in areas including new science and breakthrough technologies, unexplained phenomena and ESP, near death experiences and the afterlife, consciousness research and much more!
The debut of our new show has been a long time in the making and we are so proud to present it on CLN.
This month, I interview the founder and editor of Elevated Existence Magazine, Tammy Mastroberte as well as Near Death Experiencer and author of the best-selling book Saved by the Light, Dannion Brinkley AND his family.
Both interviews address some of the bigger questions many of us have about the nature of reality and the universe and most importantly the nature of ourselves!
In Tammy's interview, we discuss the afterlife, past lives, synchronicity, forgiveness, and more. This is a very intimate discussion. Tammy will share with us her very personal spiritual journey which led her to the founding of her award winning magazine, Elevated Existence. She says that with each very special interview she conducts (and she's featured some of the top names in entertainment and spirituality on her covers), she learns so much more about the people she interviews and herself! We'll discuss the spiritual journey of Jane Fonda, Tammy's interview with pioneering past life expert Dr. Brian Weiss and how this led her to discover some of her own past lives plus so much more!
In my interview with Dannion and Kathryn Brinkley and their daughter Alexandra, we discuss each of their unique journeys of transformation - both Dannion and Kathryn are multiple near death experiencers and Alexandra found her own unique path through her natural affinity with nature and shamanism. All three have done amazing things, working with dying veterans in hospice. What Dannion has to say about this rewarding work will surely bring a tear (of joy) to your eye! I myself was so moved during this emotional interview conducted at the Conscious Life Expo in Los Angeles last February, that as soon as we stopped recording, I broke down and cried! Which triggered a teary reaction to all that were in the room!
So please don't miss out. Make sure to tune in each and every month to Conscious Inquiry! See you over there!!

Contemplating the Magic of the Universe
Writer Alexis Brooks "Contemplating the Universe"
“The Universe is so brilliant!” That’s what Tammy Mastroberte founder and editor of Elevated Existence magazine told me at the conclusion of our interview (which will air on Conscious Life News in March), as we were discussing the language the Universe speaks, its intelligence and intrinsic link to all of us. We can carry on a dialogue with this magnificent and mysterious consciousness if we are open to it.
Brahma, a Sanskrit term often referred to as “the biggest” or “the Universe” or even “God of the Universe”, carries a mysterious and somehow omniscient spark, hearing our every word, every thought, every nuance we have, even before we have it.
How is this so? How does the Universe speak and more importantly, how do we learn to decipher its message?
When discussing how Tammy started her now well recognized and award winning publication Elevated Existence, she admitted that as with most entrepreneurial endeavors, there was a fair amount of ambivalence and anxiety. She said her first knee jerk reaction to starting her own magazine so she could deliver topics that she loved to cover (spirituality and self improvement), was “are you out of your mind?” A friend had urged her to consider undertaking the endeavor since knowing that Tammy was so passionate about these subjects. But she said shortly thereafter, she thought to herself “why not?” And so she went for it. And the rest is history. Tammy is now in her fourth year of the publication which has seen amazing success and features well known names both within and outside of the “new age/spirituality” genre. She has interviewed Gregg Braden, Deepak Chopra, Marianne Williamson and Dr. Brian Weiss as well as hip hop mogul Russell Simmons, actress and singer Olivia Newton John and Jane Fonda! She says, each of these individuals, no matter their background all have a common interest; a common bond – that of the spiritual journey. And they’ve shared many details of their own personal journey with Tammy and with her magazine.

Tammy Mastroberte Founder & Editor Elevated Existence
We agreed that to be sure the Universe is brilliant in how it knows what you need and if you’ve got an acute awareness of this you will hear its messages loud and clear – even if you’re not quite sure what it is trying to tell you at the outset.
We discussed so many fascinating topics in our hour long interview and were so excited about all of these subjects; we continued chatting well after the interview had ended.
Among the topics we covered was past life regression and how her interview with author and psychiatrist Dr. Brian Weiss led her deeper into her own quest to understand herself through her past lives. As I was listening to her talk about one of her previous incarnations that she experienced, I found myself daydreaming a bit, thinking “perhaps I too will look into my own past lives through regression.” It’s interesting how your mind can wander and still be focused on the conversation at hand. This was the case here. By the time she finished relaying her regression story to me I had silently decided, this is something I will look into for myself.
The Universe responded to my thought in perfect accord…
Minutes after I hung up with Tammy, I had walked around to get a bit of exercise and stretch as I usually do after doing an interview or writing a lengthy piece, just to clear my head. I wandered into the living room and noticed three pieces of something on the floor sitting on one of our oriental rugs. Upon closer examination I noticed that these were pieces of a mineral (Azurite) of which I had displayed on the second floor as part of a collection of a variety of crystals and minerals. “How on earth did fragments of azurite make its way downstairs and end up on the living room floor?” I immediately went to examine the display of minerals including the azurite which sits in a spot that would make it unlikely to fall. I saw no breaks or cracks in the stone. The whole thing was truly mystifying me. Of course, as I usually do, I went through a process of elimination exercise, including asking my husband if he’d picked up and dropped the stone – his was an emphatic “no.” So how could these pieces end up downstairs?
When these little “anomalous” events occur in my life, after I’ve ruled out all matter of rational explanation, I then turn inward and reflect on something I might have been thinking about, said or requested to account for the experience in the form of a symbol – in this case the mineral fragments. I quickly went to a metaphysical mineral reference book that I often use and looked up common qualities of azurite. Among other things, here’s what it said:
“Azurite can assist in exploring past or alternate lifetimes, and in recovering information and knowledge from those lifetimes.” (Source: The Book of Stones – Who They Are & What They Teach)
Crystal display with azurite at far right.
When we speak of “Universal language” one might assume that this is some sort of audible dialect that we can learn to decipher and speak for ourselves. My surmise is that the language that is most powerful and most innate in us all is that of the unspoken, the symbolic, that which is felt and assimilated through one’s own experience. The true magic of this intriguing discussion I had with Tammy Mastroberte went far beyond the words we spoke during our interview, but in the felt experience; the language of the Universe that gave its own unique wink and nod to me, well after our talk had concluded.
As I continue to contemplate the magic of the Universe, I never cease to be amazed at its brilliance, perfection and communion with us. The Universe is listening indeed!
Make sure to tune in to my interview with the editor of Elevated Existence, Tammy Mastroberte this March on Conscious Life News!

An Art-full Message from Higher Journeys!
I have always held a humble reverence for the art form. Art can be seen through the wide eyes of a child or the discriminate aficionado of Picasso, Van Gogh or Warhol . It can be heard when a grand symphony is playing, all instruments in perfect symmetry or the singular a capella voice bringing one to tears. It is the written word, artfully articulated in poetic prose or pounced upon the page with fervent tenacity. It can be seen and tasted in the creation of food, meticulously prepared by the culinary artist and fully appreciated by his or her admiring diner.
The artist is one who creates - all things. Therefore we are all artists in one form or another. We are here to create, to explore and to express ourselves in the myriad ways that only we can, uniquely!
I am no exception. I began the creative expression of writing as a child, encouraged by my beautiful mother who was a teacher and a writer herself. I kept diaries, jotted copious notes on life experiences and later entered creative writing classes and contests, later to be trained as a journalist. I then decided to pick up the brush, or pencil - any medium I could find to extend my musings in a visual form. I understood that art was subjective (as frankly all things are). This is the beauty of art. I was just adding to the tapestry - another note in a grand symphony of expression.
Today, it is my pleasure to introduce to you dear reader, my contribution of this other passion of mine - visual art!
I invite you to peruse a few of my more spiritually inspired pieces that I've produced.
As a thank you for your support of Higher Journeys as we approach our 1 year anniversary, I am offering a personally signed print for you! Simply click here to learn more about my work and how you can support Higher Journeys in a big way.
It has been my absolute pleasure to share my work (my passion) with you. And I am so incredibly humbled that so many of you have resonated with my message; a message, that I truly feel is shared by so many - that of the human spirit and its potential! We are the art and the artist. We are the creation and the creator and when we can come to appreciate each other's creation, we begin to crack open the doors of authentic evolution and enlightenment - we are on that threshold!
So thank you once again. I look forward to sharing many more Higher Journeys with you!
